About Des Mitchell

DES MITCHELL BIOGRAPHY

 

Des Mitchell started as a DJ at the age of 14 and became a pro DJ at the age of 22..playing records for a living. He joined BBC radio WM at Pebble Mill studios in Birmingham where he had his own Sunday afternoon show with dance, soul disco and reggae music.

It started out as  40 feature but before long he had expended to a full-blown 3 hour show.... He worked at the BBC till 1985 and decided he needed a holiday. He headed for Tenerife for a short stay with some friends who had a little bar out there. To his surprise me they we're playing loads of his cassettes with the soul sessions in the bar !!!..Impulisve as he was he quit his job in the UK and ended up staying in Tenerife for 4 years, being one of the main DJ’s playing in the clubs

After 4 years in Tenerife he felt it was time to try his luck on the other side of the Ocean.

In January 1989 he packed up and left for Canada in and found work at radio C.I.U.T. As Des need to have contact with a crowd he never left the clubs and played in and around the Toronto are at household names like  Copa & Empire &  Starlight. After a 6 month adventure he missed his home ground and returned to Europe. Which mend back to Tenerife in the summer of 1989. Recently landed at Tenerife and ready to pick up where he left of his life took another turn. He was offered to trial at BCM Planet Dance in Mallorca, the biggest club in Europe with a total capacity close to 5000 people. After 3 days he got offered a spot as a resident DJ and has been there ever since. He has seen many DJ’s come and go and played with the biggest names in the industry. He travelled to every corner of the globe and played on the biggest events known to date. He was a resident for the world famous Ministry of Sound, Creamfields just to name a few...In 1995 he played at the world famous Velfarre club in Tokyo..one of the most expensive clubs on the planet..build for the lousy fee of $40 million. It’s still one of Des’s favorite gigs he ever played.

Due to his work Des had the opportunity to travel to strange places and meet with stranger people, which made him into a real life world citizen. Over the course of time he lived in Korea, Taiwan, India, Maldives, Singapore, South Africa, United States and the majority of European Countries. Especially in Singapore he was part of the grand opening of the brand new club of the Ministry of Sound and played the New Years party at Desert Zone in Dubai. The list never ends.

Due to his yearlong residency in BCM Des’ home base is still Mallorca in Spain, although frequent trips to Ibiza are always part of the summer schedule. He did a full summer residency in mega club Eden..and played on a frequent bases in all the major clubs…. Es Paradis, Space, Privilege..just to name a few. He also toured with DJ Sammy all over the UK.

Apart from being a DJ Des always has been very active as a music producer as well. Together with partner in musical crime, Christian Davies they runs InDemand Music and the Mitchell Project, where Des’s releases his own productions. In Demand Music represents various artist and DJ’s and in based out of the United Kingdom.

 

Various of  Des’ productions reached to great heights in the UK Billboard charts. Probably most knows being the track Welcome to the Dance, which made it to number 5 in the regular Billboard charts and was a #1 club hit all over the world, It probably still is one of the most frequent played club tracks and is a regular in any DJ’s record bag.

Currently Des’ is still active at his old roots as well..Radio. Des has a weekly dance show, The Mitchell Project sessions, and soul show, Soul Kitchen, on local English speaking radio station Luna Radio, based out of Mallorca  

Des’ has been in this business for over 30 years, and can be called an all round veteran. He worked with all walks of life..Household names like Carl Cox, Tiesto, Paul Oakenfield, Roger Sanchez all have a spot in his private phonebook..also the likes of Ron Jeremy, a phenomenon in his own line of work, has crossed his path.

Des still does best what he loves most.
